Boats, huts and shingle at Dungeness
13th June 2004
Dungeness is one of Europe's largest areas of shingle and, amazingly perhaps, it is home to over 600 different species of plants, a third of all the species found in Britain. Much of the shingle area has been irreparably damaged but there are still places where you can still see the ridges which mark each successive shoreline, created when shingle was thrown up on the beach during violent storms (see later picture).
Dungeness is very much a working community and fishing is an important livelihood for many of the residents.
