I can't say that I know Sussex well, and those of its delights that I've discovered have been more by accident than design. It's an enormously varied county – or pair of counties I should, more correctly, say – and in these photographs I have tried to reflect some of that variety.

I have known and loved the Romney Marsh area since I was a child but it has changed a great deal since then. No longer is most of its acreage devoted to sheep pasture - today 90 per cent of the Marsh is ploughed up for wheat, potatoes, and that bane of the hay fever sufferer, oil seed rape. Dungeness is no longer an empty, desolate peninsula - instead it is dominated by the two nuclear power stations and massive gravel workings.

But there are places that still retain their historic marshland form and beauty and I hope that my photographs have captured some of their true feel.

Kent is packed full of historic sites, some well-known others less so. Not surprisingly, for a county that's always been in the front line of England's defence, castles feature prominently but not to the exclusion of many other fascinating buildings.

I was born and brought up in Kent, albeit on the London borders, but moved away in my teens. It is only in recent years that I have begun to visit it once more and to seek out some of its less well known places.

Despite creeping suburbia, busy motorways, and its role as Britain's main link to the continent, there are still a host of attractive towns and villages, and beautiful countryside and coastline to enjoy.

The Day of Syn takes place in Dymchurch on August Bank Holiday every second (even) year. Inspired by the Dr Syn tales written by Russell Thorndike, the event's purpose is to raise funds for local charities as well as giving all concerned a fun time.
